Riverside Police Shoot, Wound Man Who Opened Fire on Officers With Handgun: Officials

A 37-year-old man was shot and wounded by Riverside police Saturday morning after opening fire on officers with a handgun, officials said.

Roberto Jimenez remained hospitalized Saturday afternoon, according to a news release from the Riverside Police Department. His condition was unknown.

The incident began about 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Fourteenth Street and Howard Avenue, where officers conducting a traffic stop heard gunshots nearby, the release said.

Additional responding officers arrived in the area of Fourteenth and Forrest streets, where they were fired upon by Jimenez, the Police Department said. Several more units responded after a call for help was broadcast.

After two of those officers were shot at near Howard Avenue and Cottage Street, according to the police statement, at least one of them opened fire.

Jimenez, a Riverside resident, was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities said.

No officers were reported injured.
