A man accused of attempting to rob a Fontana store Sunday was shot and killed by police who say he was armed with a knife and large rock.

A store clerk reported a possible robbery in progress at a Chevron gas station at the corner of Sierra and Slover avenues around 4:15 a.m., a Fontana Police Department news release stated.

Responding officers spotted a man holding a knife and large rock in front of the store, police said.

When the man saw the police he went back in to the store.

Officers followed the man and attempted to get him to surrender, but he advanced toward them.

The man, only described as being 47, was then shot and killed.

The officers and store clerk were not injured.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the incident.
