Four adults and one child were killed Thursday evening when two vehicles collided near a freeway offramp in Ontario, authorities said.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. when a car veered off of a ramp from the eastbound 10 Freeway and struck another car, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said.

The incident took place near the intersection of Vineyard Avenue and G Street, located just south of the freeway, said Sgt. Jeff Higbee of the Ontario Police Department.

It was not immediately clear if the deceased persons were occupants of one vehicle or both.

The Highway Patrol was investigating the collision, whose cause was unknown.
