Officers responded about 8:15 p.m. to a report of a shooting involving an AK-47 assault rifle in the area of East 81st Street and Avalon Boulevard, in the Florence neighborhood, a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant said.

They arrived to find four people who who had been struck by gunfire -- three men and a woman -- one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the LAPD spokesman.

The three other victims were transported from the scene to a hospital, said Erik Scott, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

One of the patients died at the medical center, police said. The conditions of the two surviving men were unknown.

None of the victims were immediately identified.

A witness described the incident as a drive-by shooting, in which at least 13 shots were fired from a white vehicle.

"I ducked," Eduard Emerson told KTLA. "As long as I can hear the gunshots, I'm alright. You can't live but once."

The area outside the Three Star Liquor Market on Avalon Boulevard was taped off as an investigation was underway.

No description of the shooter was available.
