The Embassy Suites hotel near LAX was evacuated for several hours Monday afternoon amid a public safety response that included a hazardous materials team.
The “active police incident” was taking place at the hotel at 1440 E. Imperial Ave., the El Segundo Police Department said in a brief notification about 3:45 p.m.
The incident was occurred inside a hotel room, prompting the evacuation of the rest of the building and the closure of surrounding streets.
Guests who were evacuated said they heard someone was cooking meth inside a room, leading to fumes, but officials on scene would not confirm that. One woman said she was assisted out of her room by firefighters.
"We're hoping we can get our luggage, at least," Meredith Scudder said.
Guests said they saw two police officers being taken away by an ambulance.
One person was detained and was being questioned, authorities on scene.
"They were using a butane along with cough syrup and soap to extract the THC from marijuana," according to El Segundo police Lt. Scott Doukakis.
The evacuation was lifted before 6 p.m.
Police advised motorists to avoid the area around the Embassy Suites by Hilton hotel, which is just west of Sepulveda Boulevard in an area busy with traffic from Los Angeles International Airport.
