An armed man was shot and wounded after a foot chase with sheriff’s deputies Friday afternoon in Inglewood, authorities said.

The deputies were traveling eastbound on Century Boulevard around 3:20 p.m. when they attempted to make contact with the unidentified man, who was walking toward them, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

When the deputies got out of their vehicle, the man took off running west down Century Boulevard, the release stated.

The deputies chased after the man as he ran toward the southeast corner of Century and La Brea boulevards, where he turned into a shopping center parking lot, according to the Sheriff’s department.

At that point, authorities said the suspect produced a handgun.

“The deputies feared for their safety, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” the release stated.

The man was struck once in the upper torso and transported to a hospital in fair condition, according to the Sheriff’s department.

The deputies were not injured.

A .22 caliber revolver allegedly belonging to the suspect was recovered at the scene.

No other information was immediately available.
