A woman leaving a birthday party ran over her 16-month-old niece, killing the little girl, in what is believed to be a “tragic accident,” police said Sunday.

The 22-year-old aunt was leaving a relative’s home in the 6000 block of East Camino Manzano around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the incident occurred, Anaheim Police Department Sgt. Daron Wyatt said.

She was backed into the driveway and pulling forward when she felt the vehicle roll over something and heard screaming, he said.

The woman then realized her 16-month-old niece had been struck.

The child’s father rushed her to Placentia-Linda Hospital, nearly 15 minutes away, according to Google Maps.

The girl, identified as Laila Arman by the Orange County coroner’s office, was pronounced dead around 6:21 p.m.

The coroner’s office also stated the vehicle involved was a pickup truck.

The aunt was “obviously distraught, but cooperative,” Wyatt said.

She stayed at the scene, and drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor.

“We all have heavy hearts today.  It is so hard having to watch a family go through something like this,” Wyatt said.

An investigation continues, but the incident appears to have been a “tragic accident.”
