Coast Guard Searching for Swimmer Missing Near Manhattan Beach

The U.S. Coast Guard was actively searching for a 25-year-old man reported missing after entering the ocean with friends Tuesday evening near Manhattan Beach.

The swimmer, described only as a black manĀ  wearing dark gray shorts, was last seen in the water near Tower 18, according to a news release from the Coast Guard.

The man's friend's told rescuers they lost sight of him about 50 yards off shore.

The friends also told rescuers that the man knew how to swim, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Ocean Lifeguard Specialist Lidia Barillas.

Two helicopters as well as numerous rescuers on boats and jet skis were assisting in the search, video from the scene showed.

As of 8:30 p.m. the underwater search for the unidentified swimmer had been suspended until first light, according to a tweet from LA County Fire's, Lifeguard Division.

Anyone with information was urged to immediately contact the Coast Guard Command Center in San Pedro at 310-521-3805.
