A Las Vegas man has been arrested after allegedly kidnapping a young Victorville couple returning home from prom, officials said Tuesday.

The two 17-year-old victims had attended a high school prom and were returning to the male victim’s apartment when the suspect pulled into the parking lot and forced the pair into his car at gunpoint on April 30, according to a news release the Victorville Police Department.

The suspect, Jared T. James, 22, of Las Vegas, who was a longtime friend of the female victim, drove to an isolated area off the 15 Freeway, stopped the car and began to fight with the boy. The gun was discharged twice, but no one was struck, police said.

The girl managed to escape, and later the boy used James’ gun to hit him and get away.

A truck driver near the scene drove the victims to a St. Mary’s Medical Center but they did not suffer any injuries. Authorities did not release the names of the victims.

James drove to the house of a family member, who then took him to Loma Linda Veteran’s Hospital, police said.

Deputies responded to the hospital, where James was treated for his injuries and he was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and attempted murder, police said. He was booked into jail and his being held in lieu of $1 million.

The gun used in the incident was found near the scene and James’ car was found at a home in Victorville.
