A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after CHP officers allegedly found him passed out behind the wheel of a car on a San Diego-area freeway off-ramp early Monday, according to a local television station and jail records.

The man in the driver’s seat was asleep and had his foot on the brake when he was discovered off of State Route 54 in National City shortly before 3 a.m., KGTV in San Diego reported, citing the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle remained in drive and the doors were locked.

Officers knocked on the driver’s side window multiple times and shined a flashlight in his face before the man awoke, news video from the scene showed.

The driver, identified by the station as Jorge Zazueta, was removed from the car. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after a field sobriety test was conducted, according to KGTV.

Zazueta was booked into San Diego Central Jail shortly after 5 a.m. on two misdemeanor DUI charges, inmate records showed. His bail was set at $2,500.

Another occupant, whose snores were at first mistaken for a growling dog, was also allegedly drunk when he was found inside the vehicle, the station reported. The man was taken to a CHP holding facility.

It was not known whether he was arrested or faced any charges.

No injuries were reported.
