Authorities responded to a family disturbance call at a home in the 3700 block of Whiteside Street about 2:35 a.m., said Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The unidentified woman was in bed asleep when she was struck repeatedly with a hammer-type weapon, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.

The attack awakened other family members who tried to restrain the man until deputies arrived, authorities said.

The victim suffered injuries to her head and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Rouzan said.

The alleged attacker was later identified as the victim’s son 27-year-old Gustavo Gonzalez, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies needed to use physical force to take him into custody, Rouzan said.

Video from the scene showed a shirtless man strapped to a gurney and being loaded into an ambulance.

Gonzalez was expected to be booked on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, the release stated.

A hammer was located at the scene, Rouzan said.
