Man, 75, Arrested in Killing of Other Man Struck in the Head With Hammer: Ventura Police

A 75-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of homicide in the death of a man who was struck in the head with a hammer, Ventura police said Monday.

Officers were called to the 300 block of South San Clemente Street about 9:30 p.m. Sunday for a report of a fight in an alleyway, according to a news release from the Ventura Police Department.

When they got there, they were directed to a residence near the alleyway and spotted a man leaving.

The man, Gavin Hobbs, 75, was detained while officers went inside, where they found a 58-year-old man with a head injury from being struck with a hammer.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hobbs was booked on suspicion of homicide.

He is being held on $510,000 bail and is due in court Tuesday, according to county inmate records.
