A 30-year-old man was sentenced Monday to 28 years to life in prison in connection with stabbing his estranged wife’s boyfriend to death in front of a child in 2014, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office .

Prosecutors said Guillermo Hector Diaz, of Carson, broke into his estranged wife’s South Los Angeles apartment on Dec. 22, 2014 and stabbed her boyfriend several times with a pocketknife.

The attack occurred in front of the woman’s 6-year-old daughter.

Diaz then prevented the woman and her daughter from calling authorities, officials said.

Diaz was found guilty on May 17 of first-degree murder, first-degree residential burglary and two counts each of resisting an officer and dissuading a witness.

The jury found true a special allegation that Diaz used a knife during the crime, officials said.
