An Oregon woman fatally shot a home intruder in Portland after she found him hiding in her child’s bedroom early Sunday, KGW reports.

Officials went to the woman’s home around 1:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a homeowner shooting someone inside the home.

The woman, 33, told police she returned home with her two kids, ages 5 and 10, and found a stranger in one of their bedrooms. She was armed with a handgun and fired at least one shot at the man.

Officers found the man, 59, dead at the scene. Police did not identify him, citing the need to notify his family.

“Great for her for defending herself and her family, but … I think it’s unfortunate too, though, that it has to come to that,” a female neighbor told the Portland-area television station.

An autopsy will be performed Monday, according to The Oregonian’s website.

Officers did not arrest the homeowner, who they said was cooperating with investigators.

The investigation is ongoing. The local district attorney’s office will decide whether any charges will be filed in the case, according to KGW.
