A 21-year-old mother accused of killing her infant son has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from his death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Calixta Landa, of Los Angeles, was charged Monday with murder and assault on a child causing death, three days after the weeks-old boy died, according to a news release from the DA’s office.

The baby had been taken to a hospital by relatives last Thursday after they “reportedly” observed the little boy limp and pale in his bassinet, the release stated.

Medical personnel determined the infant was underweight and suffered from multiple injuries, prosecutors said. The injuries inflicted caused blunt force trauma to the 19-day-old boy’s brain, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The boy, identified by the Sheriff’s Department as Sebastian Landa, died two days after being hospitalized.

Landa was arrested Friday, before the infant died, in connection with his injuries.

She allegedly admitted to abusing the baby to sheriff’s detectives, according to the department.

Landa entered a not guilty plea to the two felony counts Tuesday and is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 2., according to the DA’s office.

She faces a maximum possible prison sentence of 25 years to life if convicted on the charges.

Landa is being held on $2 million bail.
