The incident began when deputies attempted to serve court documents notifying the man that he was about to lose custody of the little girl, Houston-area television station KTRK reported.

The father allegedly would not answer the door and sent threatening messages to the child’s mother, indicating he would harm the toddler, according to the TV station.

At some point, he walked outside with a gun to his head, KTRK reported.

“He made several motions toward harming himself,” Monroe County Constable Precinct 3 Chief Deputy Matt Rodrigue told the station. “After several moments of being in a standoff with deputies, he returned to the inner part of the doorway where he committed suicide, shot himself.”

Deputies went inside the home and found the girl dead from an apparent gunshot, according to KTRK.

Authorities did not immediately release the names of the father and the child.
