A man who was seen running up and down the lanes on the southbound side of the 5 Freeway in Irvine has died following a shooting involving a California Highway Patrol officer, authorities reported late Monday.
The southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway at Highway 133 in Irvine were shut down during the investigation into the shooting, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The incident began just before 7 p.m. on the 5 Freeway near Barranca Parkway when drivers started calling 911 to report a person in the lanes.
"Dispatch did receive calls of a pedestrian in the lanes running back and forth in the lanes, on both the northbound side at first and then the southbound side," CHP Officer Paul Fox said.
The man was hit by a car, but was still up and walking around. A shooting occurred when a CHP officer arrived on scene, but the details about what led to the actually shooting were not immediately released.
The CHP officer performed CPR on the man, Fox said.
He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
