A mother and her two young sons were stabbed Tuesday night on Wallace Avenue near 19th Street in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

Fire and police personnel responded to a call around 7:30 p.m. and found the three with stab wounds; the youngest, an 11-year-old boy, was stabbed in the chest several times, according to Lt. Greg Scott with the Costa Mesa Police Department.

All three victims were transported to nearby hospitals, and the 11-year-old had to go into surgery, officials said. Bella Rosette, who lives near the scene of the stabbing, said both boys appeared conscious as they were wheeled into ambulances, but the mother did not.

The cause is unknown but police do have a suspect in custody and there are no outstanding suspects, Scott said. An officer sustained a minor injury while detaining the person, he added.

Police did not identify the suspect or victims. No further details were immediately available.
