The incident occurred when a woman was driving in the 500 block of 46th Street and a man jumped into her vehicle, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said.

While the woman was putting the van in reverse to make a U-turn, the stranger entered through a passenger-side door and told the driver “he needed help and that someone was following him,” Pratt said.

The driver told police she got scared and got out of the vehicle. She was not injured, Pratt said.

The man then drove the van a short distance before crashing into a garage in the 400 block of West San Antonio Drive, Pratt said.

Video from Sky5 about 7:40 a.m. showed the severe damage to both the garage and the van.

Police were called to the scene, but the man had fled by the time they arrived, Pratt said.

He was described as a bald, white or Hispanic man in his 30s.
