A man has been arrested in the death and sexual assault of an 8-year-old Illinois girl who disappeared while waiting for a church bus the day before Thanksgiving.
Glen Ramey, 53, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and predatory sexual assault in connection to the death of 8-year-old Sabrina Stauffenberg.
On Nov. 23, Sabrina disappeared while waiting on the porch of her Olney home for a church bus, the Belleville News-Democrat reported. Olney is a city of about 8,600 in southern Illinois, about 120 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri.
“She was standing on her front porch, waiting for the church bus. She was on the phone with her grandma at the time,” family friend and neighbor Denise Haley told the newspaper. “She was telling her grandma that the church bus hadn’t come yet.”
When Sabrina's grandmother hung up to call the church to find out why the bus was late, the 8-year-old girl disappeared, Haley said.
Sabrina's aunt, who was home at the time, suspected the girl had been lured away since she didn't hear any commotion, the News-Democrat reported.
Search crews later found Sabrina's body near a vinegar plant.
Around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Ramey was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and predatory sexual assault. Illinois State Police arrested Ramey.
Haley told the News-Democrat that Ramey had been dating one of Sabrina's relatives.
He is currently being held at Richland County Jail.
Haley has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Sabrina's funeral expenses. More than $10,000 was raised within three days.
