An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer was killed early Sunday when a car and an Uber vehicle crashed at an intersection in Simi Valley, officials reported.
LAPD Officer Heather Monroe, 30, was killed in the crash that occurred about 2:10 a.m. at the intersection of Cochran Street and Sycamore Drive, according to Watch Commander Rob Brill, of the Simi Valley Police Department.
Three others suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash, officials reported.
Both cars involved in the crash were carrying a driver and a passenger. The vehicle Monroe was a passenger in was traveling southbound on Sycamore, the Uber was going eastbound on Cochran, police said.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, but it appears that one of the vehicles failed to stop for a red light, the Simi Valley Police Department reported.
"We do believe that somebody may have violated the right-of-way that created this collision," Joseph May, deputy chief of the Simi Valley Police Department, told KTLA.
Officers on scene were checking with local businesses to see if any surveillance cameras captured footage of the deadly crash.
Monroe, of Simi Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she was wearing her seatbelt. She was assigned to the Devonshire Division, LAPD officials said Sunday evening.
The driver of the car was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.
The driver of the Uber suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The passenger in the Uber was not injured in the crash.
Simi Valley Police are investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the deadly crash, May said.
The intersection of Cochran Street and Sycamore Drive was closed for several hours, but has since reopened.
"Losing an officer is devastating, but the pain is intensified for the men and women of the Department when it happens during what is supposed to be the happiest time of the year," the LAPD said in a statement. Officials for that agency did not release more information about Monroe or the crash Sunday.
