Authorities were in pursuit of a motorcyclist on the southbound 5 Freeway in Orange County on Thursday.

The motorcyclist was traveling at high rates of speed, at times exceeding 100 mph.

The pursuit began around 9:15 p.m. on the southbound 605 Freeway in the El Monte area, said California Highway Patrol Lt. Hugh Johnson. The man drove down through Long Beach before he began speeding deep into Orange County on the freeway.

The motorcyclist sped through the entirety of Orange County and reached the San Diego County line, where Sky5 was not permitted to enter the airspace.

Authorities originally tried to pull the man over for speeding, but he failed to yield, Johnson said.

There were three motorcycles reported stolen in the last 24 hours, he added, though officials were unable to confirm if this one had been stolen as they were not able to get close enough to see the make or model.

No further details were immediately available.

Correction: A previous version of this story misstated the freeway the motorcyclist was traveling on.
