Shooting Leaves 42-Year-Old Man Dead in Long Beach

An investigation was underway Friday after a 42-year-old man was fatally shot in Long Beach the night before.

Officers were called to the 1900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue to investigate a shooting report at about 9:50 p.m., Long Beach Police Department Lt. Prieto said.

A man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso was found at dead at the scene, according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.

He was later identified as Ellis Spillman of Long Beach, authorities said.

Spillman was inside of a home when a man "confronted" him with gunfire, according to the release.

No description of the gunman was immediately available.

The motive for the shooting was unknown but the incident appears to be gang-related, authorities said.

The investigation is ongoing.
