A driver was fatally shot by Santa Ana police after leading them on a pursuit into Westminster late Sunday night.

Officers attempted to pull over a maroon sedan for some type of traffic violation at about 10 p.m., Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The driver fled westbound on Bolsa Avenue, leading police on a pursuit from Santa Ana to Westminster.

At some point during the chase, officers believe they saw the driver throw a gun from the vehicle.

The driver then crashed into a car near the intersection of Magnolia Street and Bolsa Avenue, Bertagna said.

He continued westbound in the eastbound lanes before crashing again, this time head-on into a silver Toyota.

A man and woman inside the Toyota were hospitalized in stable condition, Bertagna said.

The pursuit driver, who police noticed was armed with a second gun, fled on foot after the crash.

The officers gave chase and at some point, an officer involved shooting occurred.

“He went down ... died at the scene,” Bertagna said.

It was unclear what prompted the officers to open fire but the second gun was located at the scene, Bertagna said.

No officers were injured in the incident.
