Officer Toshio Hirai, 34, was riding his bike to work when the collision occurred near the intersection of Western Avenue and 238th Street around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday.

He leaves behind a wife and 2-year-old son.

"A number of outstanding doctors, nurses and other hospital staff members did all that they could to try to save Toshio," the Gardena Police Department posted on its Facebook page. "While doctors did their best to try and save him, he died at the hospital late this afternoon."

Earlier, while Hirai remained in critical condition, the agency said it was "a very difficult day for our department."

Aerial video from Sky5 showed the motorcycle down in lanes as emergency crews took the injured officer from the scene in an ambulance in the aftermath of the collision.

The other driver involved in the crash did stay at the scene and was talking to investigators, according to the Police Department. The driver's identity has not been released.

Hirai was raised in Gardena and joined the Police Department in 2006, where he served in a variety of roles, including SWAT officer and traffic investigator.

"Toshio, was one of the smartest people in the room," the department said. "He spoke five languages, loved life, had the best sense of humor. He worked hard for our community. Most of all he absolutely loved and cherished his wife and 2-year-old son."

The officer also attended Gardena Buddhist Church.

"He loved this community and the work he did here. The community loved him back," the agency's Facebook post reads. "We lost a guardian today, and while we’ll never be able to replace Toshio, his memory will live on and his presence will always be felt."

The department has created a fundraising page for those who wish to donate to Hirai's family.

The crash remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
