A former fourth-grade teacher at Hart Street Elementary School in Canoga Park was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for inappropriately touching six students, officials said.

Rene Tenas, 39, touched the 9 and 10-year-old students on or between Aug. 1, 2016, and Jan. 31, 2017, the Los Angeles District Attorney Office said in a news release.

Tenas was first arrested in December 2017, according to L.A. County booking records. He spent two days in jail before he posted bail.

The records show Tenas was taken back into custody on Oct. 2, 2018 after pleading no contest to two felony counts of committing a lewd act upon a child.

Officials said Tenas was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
