After multiple people were found shot inside a home in Watts, an officer-involved shooting occurred and one person was left dead while the suspect was taken into custody early Sunday.
Shortly before 6 a.m., gunfire broke out at a home near Defiance Avenue and East 95th Street and when officers arrived to the scene, they discovered multiple people shot, police said. Later in the morning, the mother of the suspected shooter said her son seemed to confess to a deadly crime over the phone.
Video of the scene when officers arrive shows them going into the home with their guns drawn.
At some point, a man allegedly started firing at police and an officer-involved shooting followed, police said.
By the end of the incident, five people were shot and one of them was left dead, according to police. However, an LAPD official later said it's unclear how many people may be injured in total.
As family members later arrived to the scene, a woman named Cheryl she believes her son is the suspected shooter after he called her, saying, "Mama, I just killed somebody."
"What? Wait a minute, hold up," she said was her response.
She said she knows nothing about the events that unfolded before her son was taken into custody. His identity has not been released. She said her mother also called, saying she had been shot.
"I don't know. He just snapped," Cheryl said. "I don't know what happened, how it happened."
None of the victims have been identified and it's still unclear who was fatally shot.
No officers were shot and the suspect was eventually taken into custody, police said. Two people were rescued from the home and transported to medical treatment.
Police said the suspect was also transported to medical care. No other details were released by officials as the investigation continues.
