Los Angeles County Sheriff's detectives are conducting a death investigation of a woman found in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Azusa on Saturday.

Investigators said a local resident out on a walk found in the victim in a gully around 12:15 p.m.

"A person who lives nearby was walking through the area when they made the grisly discovery off this turnout here on East Fork Road," Lt. Derrick Alfred of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau told KTLA.

Deputies responded to the scene, approximately one mile east of Highway 39, in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County.

The woman was found deceased lying in a culvert adjacent to a roadway turnout, investigators said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and appeared to have suffered blunt force trauma, Alfred said.

But detectives were still working to determine whether the woman was the victim of foul play, or an accident.

The woman's identity has not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
