Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School
Petersen Automotive Museum
6060 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles
http://www.petersen.org
According to this exhibit, historically, artists working outside of the mainstream fine art tastes were marginalized or ignored and put into a box labeled “underground.” In 1993, the exhibit Kustom Kulture: Von Dutch, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Robert Williams, & Others opened at the Laguna Art Museum, introducing a car-centric culture to the Art world and acted as a catalyst for Juxtapoz Magazine. Juxtapoz Magazine sought to highlight the works of the unconventional and continues to promote all genres of artists.
Drawing inspiration from Juxtapoz Magazine, the most read art magazine in the world, Auto-Didactic: The Juxtapoz School features the works of “lowbrow” artists, focusing on those working outside the mainstream tastes of the fine art world. Unlearning the ideas of “acceptable” art forms, these artists use their advanced technical skills to create “low brow” works of art. By addressing themes such as automobiles, comic books, psychedelic posters, surfing, skateboarding, and B-movie monsters, the exhibit seeks to feature artists who have contributed to the tradition of automotive themes rooted in the “Kustom Kulture” origins of the magazine.
