A suspect was in custody after an assault on a street performer in Venice was caught on video Monday, police said.

The musician was stationed on the sidewalk at 2 Rose Ave. when another man approached him and stabbed him multiple times at about 4:30 p.m., according to Los Angeles Police Officer Mike Lopez.

Bystanders began struggling with the assailant in an attempt to stop him from fleeing the scene, Lopez said.

The citizens were able to effective detain the attacker until authorities arrived.

The suspect was eventually taken into police custody, Lopez said, but as of Monday night he had not yet been booked into jail.

Police were not releasing the suspect's name and described him only as a black man.

The victim — who was also not being identified — sustained stab wounds in his hand, chest and face, officials said. It was unclear if he was hospitalized.

A knife was recovered from the scene, according to LAPD.

No further details were available.
