An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing his father while they walked on a trail near their home in Laguna Niguel last week, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

In addition to the felony murder charge, Maximilian Gregory Ludwig also faces a special circumstances sentencing enhancement of lying in wait, according to a news release from the DA’s office.

The defendant allegedly led his father out on a walking trail near Highlands Avenue around 4 p.m. last Friday, then attacked him with rocks, prosecutors said. He is then accused of stomping on the victim’s head until the 59-year-old man died.

Christopher Ludwig was found to have died as a result of blunt force trauma, the release stated.

After, his son called 911 and was arrested at the scene by responding deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Ludwig is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. If convicted, the teen faces a minimum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

He is ineligible for bail, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
