Judge Blocks Needle Exchange Program for Drug Users in Orange County
A judge has blocked a nonprofit group’s plan to run a mobile needle exchange program for drug users in four Orange County cities.
The Orange County Register reports the court on Tuesday granted a preliminary injunction until the issue is taken to trial sometime next year.
Officials of Orange County and the cities of Anaheim, Costa Mesa and Orange had raised concerns about the potential for used syringes to litter streets and stick people.
The county seat, Santa Ana, was not part of the county’s suit but also opposed the needle exchange problem.
The group operated weekly needle exchanges in Santa Ana for two years, seeking to reduce spread of illnesses.
That ended in January when Santa Ana denied a permit to continue because of syringes found in public places.
