Homicide detectives are investigating after human skeletal remains were uncovered in the Saugus neighborhood of Santa Clarita on Wednesday, officials said.

Deputies responded around 11 a.m. to an area west of Railroad Avenue near Magic Mountain Parkway, along the South Fork Trail bike path, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

The investigation was launched after a utility company employee found a human skull in the Santa Clara riverbed, authorities said.

Coroner's officials also responded to document the scene and recover the remains. They're now working with sheriff's detectives to identify the victim and determine their cause of death.

The riverbed area is near several well-trafficked commercial areas, including the River Oaks Shopping Center, Westfield Valencia Town Center and Valencia Mart Shopping Center.
