Man With Knife Fatally Shot After Allegedly Lunging at Officer in Gardena

A man who lunged at an officer with a knife was fatally shot in Gardena Monday night, authorities said.

Gardena police responded to a call about a man with a knife in the 1700 block of West Rosecrans Avenue just before 10 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.

An officer located the suspect with a knife and asked him to drop it, according the Sheriff's Department.

The officer used his Taser when the man did not comply, the agency said. But the Taser was "ineffective," and the man lunged at the officer, the Sheriff's Department said.

That's when the officer shot him, the agency said.

The officer fired a single shot, striking the man in the upper body.

The unidentified man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The knife was recovered at the scene, the news release stated.

No officers were injured in the incident.
