Suspected DUI Driver Crashes Into Stopped Vehicle in Hyde Park, Killing 1

A woman was killed early Tuesday morning when her car was struck by a suspected DUI driver in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles.

The crash was reported about 12:30 a.m. on Crenshaw Boulevard near West 50th Street.

The victim was in a stopped vehicle on Crenshaw Boulevard when the alleged DUI driver crashed into her, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The victim's vehicle was then pushed into a light pole with enough force to knock it over, video from the scene showed.

The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Another vehicle that was parked on Crenshaw Boulevard was also damaged in the crash.

It was unclear how fast the suspect's vehicle was traveling at the time of the incident but a nearby resident said speeding in the area is a problem.

“Crenshaw drivers need to slow down … It’s very dangerous on the street,” the woman said. “It’s really sad … the girl that hit the car, she was a young girl … and the girl that was in the car dead, she was very young too,” she said.

The suspected DUI driver, identified only as a woman, was taken to a local hospital and arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter, police said.
