Person Shot and Killed by Garden Grove Police in Westminster

Garden Grove police fatally shot a person in Garden Grove on Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The shooting took place about 3:40 p.m. in the 10000 block of Bolsa Avenue, Garden Grove Police Department Lt. Carl Whitney told KTLA. It occurred as Garden Grove police detectives were conducting an investigation in the neighboring city.

A person, initially described only as male, was struck by gunfire, officials said.

Police released no information Thursday regarding the circumstances leading up to the police shooting, or what prompted officers to open fire.

"One subject was wounded during the incident and no officers were injured," the Westminster Police Department said in a written statement.

The person was pronounced dead, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said via social media.

Aerial footage from Sky5 showed police gathered around a white SUV, in which a body could be seen seated in the driver seat. The SUV had struck a block wall.

No further details were immediately available.

Henry Naliielua said he was working as a security guard at a nearby church when he saw what sounded like a police chase.

“I saw this white Range Rover with a black top speed past me, with two police cars in pursuit.’

It sounded like the SUV then struck several other vehicles, Naliielua said.

After a volley of gunfire, the SUV struck the block wall behind the church, he said.
