Sacramento City Unified School District has agreed to pay $400,000 to settle a lawsuit by a former high school student over the district’s alleged failure to investigate her 2016 off-campus rape.
The Sacramento Bee reports the then 17-year-old McClatchy High School student was suspended for the semester after a fellow student told school officials she was drugged and gang-raped by two of her classmates at an off-campus party. The two suspects were not disciplined or suspended.
The suit claimed that the district failed to investigate the rape and did not stop the bullying and harassment the young woman suffered after she returned to school.
A Sacramento Bee story in 2018 detailing the school’s handling of the student’s allegations resulted in hundreds of students walking out of class in protest.
