A missing La Puente man was found dead in the Angeles National Forest above Sierra Madre Saturday following an extensive search.

While hiking, he appeared to have slipped and fallen 40 feet into water below Hermit Falls, a detective said.

About 50 searchers and a helicopter were out Saturday looking for King.

Family members said King is an experienced hiker who goes to Chantry Flat every other day and knows the area pretty well. They grew worried after he never returned home.

Authorities found King's car in the parking lot at Chantry Flat before his body was discovered.

Searchers planned to focus on canyon bottoms, thinking King might have gone off trail. They began looking for King on Thursday night.

Saturday's search was expected to cover at least 9 square miles.
