Bird Day L.A.

International Migratory Bird Day

   This is International Migratory Bird Day. The organization Bird L.A. created by the Audubon Society of California.

    There are many educational and exciting events planned to celebrate our winged friends in the sky. There’s bird watching in Griffith Park and MacArthur Park, followed by events at the Museum of Natural History including talks by bird experts, bird watching in the gardens, and a class on tracking down house sparrows in your neighborhood.

    The afternoon schedule offers an awesome sounding guided bird watching tour of downtowns rooftop bars at the Ace Hotel and the Perch as well as a cool scavenger hunt for exotic bird watching locations around L.A.

Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers & Native Plants

    Birds and other wildlife are attracted to native California plants and flowers. To learn about this landscape folks visit the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants in Sun Valley.

    The non-profit organization has just won the Los Angeles County Green Leadership Award for its Landscaping for Resilience program. In this program, they work with neighborhood councils and community volunteer groups to design, install, and maintain public native plant gardens. Educational lessons are included with the development of the gardens so people acquire the knowledge and the skills they need to create and maintain gardens on their own.

     Working with the Green Space Los Feliz, the Silver Lake Gardening Club and the LAPD, the foundation has transformed the landscaping at the Los Feliz Post Office, the Silver Lake Meadow and the Topanga LAPD Station.


 Lawnmower Exchange Program



    If you still have some grass as part of your landscaping, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has non-polluting electric lawn mowers…cheap!

    SCAQMD Residents can now learn if they qualify and pre-register for the 2015 Lawn Mower Exchange Program.

     We have an opportunity to exchange an old, operable gasoline-powered lawn mower and purchase, at a discounted rate, a new electric lawnmower. This year, we have six models from which to choose from, with our cost being from $100 to $250 depending on the model we choose.

     Pre-registration is required! There are six exchange locations scheduled from Long Beach to Arcadia. Visit the website for registration and location information.


  Big Sunday Weekend

USA’s Biggest Community Service Festival

    Dirty hands. Open minds. Big Hearts. It’s BIG SUNDAY WEEKEND! Tens of thousands of volunteers from across the country, and as far away as Australia, are involved in volunteer projects, helping to lighten someone else’s load and making the world a nice place.

    If you love Hot Wheels, then you will love the Hot Wheels Garage at the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo. The event features a Hot Wheels display of life size cars, Hot Wheels tracks and cars.

    The museum is supporting Harbor Interfaith Services, “The mission of Harbor Interfaith is to empower the homeless and working poor to achieve self-sufficiency by providing support services including shelter, transitional housing, food, job placement, advocacy, childcare, education and life-skills training.”

     Donate individual toiletries, clothes for women and children, and blankets to receive a free raffle ticket to the drawing for some really cool Hot Wheels® toys.

     This month’s Raffle Grand Prize is a Vintage Toy Pedal Car. Come race slot cars with In the Groove Slot Cars racing. Kids can create something fun with Color Me Mine arts and crafts. In addition, a face painter and balloon artist will also be available for the kid’s enjoyment. The ADM will also be featuring a special Hot Wheels® kids sundae in their new Ice Cream Station ice cream parlor.

   In recognition of National Water Safety Month, this is the date for the 4th Annual Swim Safe Saturday at the Redlands Pool & Spa Center.

   The spa center is partnering with the Redlands YMCA Aquatic Program, to help provide financial assistance to families for swim lessons and water safety education.  FREE Swim Lessons at the “Y” will be raffled off throughout the day. 

    Representatives from Redlands YMCA Aquatic Program, Splash Kingdom Water Park, and the Redlands Fire Department will be on-site to promote safe water practices.  They will be joined by representatives of the manufacturers of pool and spa related safety products such as Poolsafe Fencing. Also, enjoy games for children, as well as balloons, FREE hot dogs, popcorn, and soda from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

   This is a new exhibit at the Autry National Center in Griffith Park. “Empire and Liberty”,  is the first major museum exhibition to illuminate the causes and legacies of the American Civil War from the vantage point of Westward expansion.

   Visitors are invited to explore the conflicts and connections of a growing nation through an astonishing array of more than 200 significant artifacts, including Texas slave sale documents, Andrés Pico’s war drum, the battle flag carried by soldiers of the California Hundred, a Buffalo Soldier’s revolver, and Cherokee General Stand Watie’s bowie knife.

   This exhibition shows how the Civil War was more than a clash between the North and South; it was part of a history of debate over how America would expand, and who, within that expanding nation, might claim freedom.
