The Getty Center is one of more than 2,000 museums in all 50-states are participating in the Blue Star Museums Program.  

The museums offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel and their families now through Labor Day, September 7th.

The Bowers Museum is a BLUE STAR MUSEUM, where the new exhibit 1968 has opened. It features a 1968 living room with a Huey helicopter actually used in Vietnam in the middle of it.  

The state of the art, multimedia exhibit examines the social forces of the turbulent 1960’s that crested in 1968.

Another BLUE STAR MUSEUM participant is the Autry National Center in Griffith Park, where members of the military and their families can see for free “Empire and Liberty”,  the first major museum exhibition to illuminate the causes and legacies of the American Civil War from the vantage point of Westward expansion.

Visitors are invited to explore the conflicts and connections of a growing nation through an astonishing array of more than 200 significant artifacts, including Texas slave sale documents, Andrés Pico’s war drum, the battle flag carried by soldiers of the California Hundred, a Buffalo Soldier’s revolver, and Cherokee General Stand Watie’s bowie knife.

This exhibition shows how the Civil War was more than a clash between the North and South; it was part of a history of debate over how America would expand, and who, within that expanding nation, might claim freedom.

Also, free “Emerging” at the Annenberg Space for Photography presents images by more than 90 emerging photographers from around the world who bring a fresh perspective and creative techniques to professional photography. The free exhibit explores how a new generation of photographers examines a variety of topics, from the personal to the global: youth culture, family, the environment, economic uncertainty, conflict and civil unrest, and the nature of the photographic image.

Closing Ceremonies

“Reach Up LA!” It’s a day of celebrations for the SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES. Closing ceremonies are Sunday at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
