The helicopter crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. in an area adjacent to the airport off of Poppy Road (map), a news release from the department stated.

The aircraft had just taken off when it began rotating clockwise, lost its hover and crashed, landing on its right side, San Bernardino fire officials said.

Three people — two pilots in their 60s and a passenger — were on board the helicopter at the time.

One of the pilots received “significant injuries” and was flown to a hospital in Colton, according to the release. That person’s condition was not immediately known.

The other two people sustained minor injuries and were able to get themselves out of the aircraft, the release stated.

The crash was being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, as well as the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration.
