VAN NUYS, Calif. — A passenger was killed and the driver badly injured in a single car crash early Saturday morning.

The deadly wreck happened around 1:30 a.m. on Van Nuys Boulevard near Friar Street.

The car was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control, according to police officers.

The vehicle jumped a curb and hit a palm tree before slamming into a storefront.

The passenger died on impact.  The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

Alcohol was likely a factor in the crash, investigators said.

The 22-year-old driver was booked for manslaughter after being released from the hospital.
