NEW YORK (KTLA) — Jean Stapleton, who rose to fame playing Archie Bunker’s wife Edith in the 1970s television series “All in the Family,” died at her home in New York City, her family announced Saturday.
Born in New York City in 1923, Stapleton got her big break in 1949, when she was cast in the national touring company of “Harvey.”
She was a showbiz veteran when she landed a part in the CBS sitcom “All in the Family” in 1971, opposite Carroll O’Connor’s bigoted Archie Bunker.
Stapleton won three Emmys for the role.
She died Friday of natural causes, and is survived by her children, television producer Pamela Putch and film and television director John Putch.
