A 13-year-old student was arrested after allegedly bringing a semi-automatic handgun and a loaded magazine to a school in Garden Grove, police said Wednesday.

A photo of the gun allegedly brought to school by a 13-year-old is seen in a photo released by the Garden Grove Police Department on Wednesday, April 23, 2014.

The incident took place Monday when someone reported that a student had a loaded gun in his backpack in one of the classrooms at Jordan Intermediate School, located at 9821 Woodbury Ave. (map), Lt. Ben Stauffer stated in a news release.

Officers detained a 13-year-old boy and reported finding a black Colt Mark IV .38 caliber, semi-automatic handgun in the boy’s backpack.

The gun was not loaded, but a loaded magazine was allegedly found in the boy’s front pants pocket, Stauffer stated.

The gun was registered to a family member who lives at the boy’s home, according to Stauffer.

The boy was arrested and booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall on weapons charges.

Investigators found an additional .22 caliber Ruger rifle at the home, which the news release indicated was not properly registered.

Parents were notified about the incident by the Garden Grove School District Monday evening, according to the news release.
