ANAHEIM, Calif. (KTLA) — An autopsy was planned on Friday for a 14-year-old high school football player who died after collapsing during practice in Anaheim.

Mitchell Cook, an incoming freshman at Canyon High School, collapsed about 4:14 p.m. Wednesday on the practice field, school officials said.

“The incident occurred at the end of the football warm-up session just before the beginning of regular practice,” Superintendent of Schools Michael L. Christensen wrote in a statement.

“The football staff attended to the student immediately in collaboration with an off-duty fireman who was on scene,” Christensen said.

“CPR was administered and continued until the paramedics arrived,” he said.

Mitchell later died at Kaiser Hospital in Anaheim.

He had a known heart condition called mitral valve prolapse, where one of the valves in his heart did not close properly.

Mitchell was regularly seen by doctors and was said to be doing fine before his death.

Friends described Cook as loyal and quick to smile, and said he was excited about starting high school.

“Just getting into high school, getting ready for his first game… This is ridiculous,” friend Kenny Cho said.

“I heard the news and I was just like speechless,” he said.

The school was providing mental health and counseling services to the family, students and community members, according to Christensen.

A candlelight vigil was planned on the football field at Canyon High School on Saturday night.
