SAN PEDRO, Calif. (KTLA) — A local hospital, along with rescue crews, staged a disaster drill on Friday morning in San Pedro.

The drill was held at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center.

It was designed to test the response and preparedness for an explosion like the Boston Marathon bombings or the blast at the Texas fertilizer plant.

More than 100 volunteers played the parts of patients for the exercise.

“Without this kind of scenario, with the amount of personnel and the extent of the scenario, you can’t get a feel for what it’s really like in a horrific accident,” Dr. Arlene Vernon said.

“We have to practice to be able to deal with that kind of chaos and that kind of horrific incident,” she said.

“We can do the medical, but the teamwork and the dealing with stress under pressure and the chaos… That’s the part you have to practice.”
