A man died Monday morning when the car he was driving slammed into mobile construction crane that was parked on a street in West Hollywood, authorities said.

The car was eastbound on Sunset Boulevard, near Sweetzer Avenue, about 4:16 a.m. when it collided with the crane, said Sgt. Kevin Rasmussen of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Aerial video of the scene showed a severely damaged Toyota Prius near the crane, which was mounted atop a four-wheel vehicle.

The unidentified driver was treated at the scene before being transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he later died, Rasmussen said.

The cause of the crash was unknown.

Sunset Boulevard was closed between Olive Drive and Sweetzer Avenue as investigators remained at the crash site. The street is expected to be reopened at about 9 a.m., said sheriff’s Capt. Gary Honings.
