An investigation was underway Saturday to determine the exact cause of a deadly single car crash near the southbound 5 Freeway and N. San Fernando Blvd. in Burbank, authorities said.

Five people were killed when their vehicle crashed and burst into flames, touching off a small grass fire, according to police.

The crash happened on the 5 freeway near San Fernando Blvd. (KTLA)

Savannah Underwood, 18, was able to escape the vehicle.  She was taken to an area hospital with a broken leg and other injuries, but was expected to survive, Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn told KTLA 5.

The crash happened around 4:13 a.m. when the four-door sedan slammed into a concrete pillar, according to Burbank police.

Speed was a factor in the wreck, Sgt. Ryburn said during a news conference Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol was assisting Burbank police with the investigation.
