SANTA ANA, Calif. (KTLA) – Crews from multiple fire departments knocked down a four-alarm blaze that erupted early Wednesday outside at a Santa Ana warehouse, authorities said.

Emergency personnel responded to the 2100 block of South Anne Street about 1:15 a.m. after multiple callers reported the fire, which threatened at least four buildings, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

santa-ana-fire“This is a commercial area. There was a number of pallets, metal containers on fire,” Cpt. Steve Concialdi said. “Our main goal was to keep the fire from spreading into the structure.”

Fifteen fire engines from six truck companies were deployed to the location, Concialdi said. Personnel from the Costa Mesa and Fountain Valley fire departments assisted in extinguishing the fire, and hazmat teams were on the scene.

Acetone and other chemicals in the warehouse raised concern that they might leak into the area’s water supply.

“There definitely are flammable liquids in there, because as you can see the fire flares up,” Concialdi said. He added: “We do have runoff. The city of Santa Ana is actively trying to mitigate that hazard with the runoff. … They have loads of sand coming in as well.”

Paul Taylor, owner of Abrasive Warehouse & Equipment, was nearby when the blaze began.

“I was in my business and I could hear a rushing sound outside the building,” he said. “I looked up and saw an orange glow through the skylight. It sounded like a Santa Ana wind with marbles hitting the building.”

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and the the cost of the damage were not immediately known.
