VENTURA, Calif. (KTLA) – Christian Lozano, a Bakersfield high school student and experienced surfer, was being hailed as a hero on Wednesday for saving an 11-year-old girl from drowning.

Lozano, 16, was visiting the Ventura Pier on Friday with his family when he heard a cry for help.

He battled the surf and brought Maya Harding, 11, to safety.

Lozano, a sophomore at Mojave River Academy, credited his surfing skills and training with the Bakersfield Young Marines.
